“We were watching the television outside our cells when the news came on and there was an item about Laci,” recalled Soares. “We were already on our third or fourth glass of pruno when Scott suddenly blurted out, ‘I didn’t mean to do it, Jimbo. I swear to God. I didn’t mean to kill my wife.’ ”

"We were arguing and I finally snapped," said Peterson. "That’s why I hit her.” Shockingly, Peterson even begged Soares to complete a “special task” for him. “At first, he asked me to break into the home in Modesto he shared with Laci and take his golf clubs,” Soares said.

“Then he said I could pick them up when his parents were there. I said it sounded suspicious and wasn’t interested. That’s when I realized when he said he’d hit Laci with a ‘club,’ he meant a golf club!”

From what Scott was saying, I got the impression he had hit her more than once and that he had broken her neck.”
