This is Omar Mateen — the Islamic terrorist who murdered 49 people while opening fire in popular Orlando, Fla., gay nightclub Pulse.
Even more wounded victims were rushed to local hospitals in what is now the most deadly terrorist attack on American soil since 9/11.
FBI sources have told The ENQUIRER that Mateen — born in New York in 1968 to parents from Afghanistan — born to Afghan parents — had been investigated by the agency in 2013 and 2014.
Mateen began his deadly reign of terror around 2 am ET at Pulse.
There were still victims alive in the building when a SWAT team rushed into Pulse at 5:15 am.
Mateen died amidst the renewed shooting. Orlando authorities released a photo (inset) of the Kevlar helmet worn by one responding officer, marked by a bullet fired by Mateen that the officer survived.
“I apologize for what my son did,” the gunman’s father, Mir Seddique, told NBC News. “I don’t know why he did it. He is dead, so I can’t ask him. I wish I knew.”
“This has nothing to do with religion,” Seddique added. ‘We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident. We weren’t aware of any action he is taking. We are in shock like the whole country.”
Seddique said that his son — who lived in Fort St. Lucie, Fla., and had worked as a security guard — had been to Miami earlier this year, and was upset by the sight of two men kissing in public.
