Susan Atkins, the cult leader had sent his killers to the Cielo Drive address "to instill fear" into Melcher because he felt Terry had broken a promise to record his music. Terry and Candice had both begged people not to tell Manson they had a new address.

There were also striking physical similarities between Candice and Sharon, who was married to director
Roman Polanski. Both actresses were blonde and blue-eyed. At 26 years old, Sharon was only two years older than Candice.

"The Manson Family was mad at Terry because he didn't want to record Charlie's music," says Steven Kay, who assisted in prosecuting the case. "In a way, they were sending a message to him that,'There for the grace of God, go you.' Terry got the message, and went underground."
