Hugh Hefner spent his final days hidden away in the rotting Playboy Mansion — having skipped plenty of his company's notorious parties in recent months! Only days away from his 91st birthday on April 9, concerned insiders were already wondering why Hefner hadn't shown up at important events.

Hefner began to shy away from the public eye in May 2016, amid reports that guests seeing the Playboy boss had to sign legal documents that kept them from discussing his condition. A source who saw the lifelong womanizer and skin mag mogul in late 2016 told The ENQUIRER: “Hef’s a shell of his former self. His body has given out and he can’t even walk anymore. He has to be lifted in and out of a wheelchair!”

Meanwhile, Hef had insisted that he was the picture of vitality. “I wish the media had informed me a little earlier in the week that I’m sick,” he scoffed in a 2016 social media post that's since been removed. “I might have cancelled my weekend plans.” But reports persist that Hef is confined to his bedroom — and he skipped 2016's big annual Midsummer Night’s Dream bash hosted by his son Cooper. Hef couldn't even come downstairs to a Playboy Mansion bash in April to celebrate a TV series based on his life!

In Sept. 2016 — a full year before he died at the age of 91 in his beloved home — cops rushed to the Playboy Mansion after a call that Hef had passed away. “We’ve heard he’s sick,” added Spencer T. Kuvin, the Florida attorney representing Chloe Goins — who claims she was molested at the mansion in 2008 by Hefner’s close pal Bill Cosby. Insiders claim that Hefner's own health began a swift decline after the death of his kid brother Keith, who died in April 2016 at the age of 87, one day before the Playboy founder's own 90th birthday.

The ENQUIRER revealed how Playmate Carla Howe ripped the lid off of the shocking decline of Hefner's home, as well — with the beauty claiming that the once-glitzy Playboy Mansion now reeks of urine, and is populated with more nurses than Playboy models. Hefner is also spending his final days as a mere guest in his own home, with the Playboy Mansion now sold to an investor who agreed to let Hef stay there until his death. Meanwhile, Hef died while facing the burden of being embroiled in one of Cosby's many lawsuits, with Goins seeking to sue Hefner while pursuing a sworn deposition. Said one insider: “This is not the way Hef wants to be remembered!”
