Priscilla — who had married Elvis in 1969, when she was 21 — had been vacationing at the posh La Costa resort south of Los Angeles at the time, and was reportedly mulling over a return to Graceland. Tragically, however, there was soon no decision to be made.

The two had become close when Priscilla had flown to Elvis' side twice in 1976 as the drugged-out rock icon suffered through health issues. Priscilla — as the mother of Lisa Marie Presley — then took over Elvis Presley Enterprises and turned Graceland into one of America's leading tourist attractions. Shirley Dieu, the longtime girlfriend of Esposito, also recalled Priscilla talking about how badly Elvis wanted Lisa Marie to have "her mom and dad together." She asked: “Who knows what might have happened had she said 'yes' immediately to his final plea to her to come back?”
