Savannah Guthrie was called in from maternity leave to save "Today" from lousy ratings — putting a new spin on the backstage drama as Megyn Kelly waits in the wings! The New York Post's "Page Six" column reports that NBC executives panicked as viewers rejected an all-male morning team of Matt Lauer and newsman Lester Holt. With ratings plummeting, the network brass decided that Savannah had to come back four days earlier than planned. It's a lucky break for Savannah, too, as insiders tell The National ENQUIRER that the "Today" veteran has been stressing out over Megyn coming on the show!

“Savannah’s very worried!” a show insider told The ENQUIRER at the start of 2017. “She publicly welcomed Megyn to NBC when it was announced in January she’d be leaving FOX News. But Savannah’s telling everyone she can that Megyn would be much better off with her own permanent afternoon talk show!” Instead, there's been plenty of backstage drama over plans to add Megyn to the "Today" line-up — with Tamron Hall already departing!

Another insider told The ENQUIRER that Megyn was hired with the intention to “build the ‘Today Show’ around her. She’s going to be sitting in one of those chairs eventually!” Savannah had just signed a five-year contract with "Today," but industry sources said the show was still eying Megyn after NBC hired her away from a potential spot on rival show “Good Morning America.”

Despite that, a “Today” show rep denied Megyn will be slipping into Savannah’s seat. “No, Megyn is not being ‘groomed,’” the rep told a reporter. “The senior leadership of NBC News expects to be long retired and sleeping in while Savannah is still rising early and anchoring ‘Today.’” And now Savannah seems to suddenly be sitting pretty with the call to save "Today" from disaster!
