Michael Douglas Frightingly Frail At Film Festival

Michael Douglas attended an event at the Tribeca Film Festival — and The National ENQUIRER caught him honoring the late rock star Prince by wearing plenty of purple. Tragically, however, eyewitnesses saw that Michael himself was once again looking at death's door! It was a grim reminder of The ENQUIRER's bombshell revelation that the actor is undergoing emergency treatment for a recurrence of cancer!

That was the diagnosis of a host of medical experts after The ENQUIRER showed them new photographs that the star didn’t want his fans to see. “Michael’s grief-stricken wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, is now bracing for their final chapter,” a spy whispered to The ENQUIRER. “It couldn’t be more tragic. It’s the end!”

The insider also said the brave actor — who's never looked more like his famous father — could be going blind from the new treatments! Michael shocked onlookers last year when he showed up with bloodied, inflamed eyes at another event. According to sources, many believed the star was battling glaucoma or another serious disease stemming from cancer treatment.

“Michael is losing his eyesight and he’s also losing his hair,” said the insider. “On top of that, his weight is plunging. He probably now weighs no more than 135 pounds!” Allen Burry, the representative for Michael, vehemently denying Michael’s cancer recurrence — but Burry did disclose in January the star was at the same hospital where he had been treated for cancer to get a checkup.

The ENQUIRER reported in February that the 71-year-old star had suffered a “shocking relapse” of cancer four years after being declared tumor-free from stage 4 tongue cancer. A family member revealed the disease may have returned, “but that it’s in another part of his body, not his tongue.”

The ENQUIRER caught Michael looking extremely frail on Feb. 7 while attending the Super Bowl, and also later that month at an airport in Paris. “Catherine wasn’t with him [in Paris], and Michael looked to be in a bad way,” said an eyewitness. “In fact, he looked terrible!”

Dr. Jerome Spunberg, a radiation oncologist in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., has not treated Michael, but he examined photos for The ENQUIRER that included close-ups of red areas on Michael's face. The doctor surmised: “These marks may be the aftereffects of cancer treatment. He doesn’t look like a healthy guy. He looks gaunt and weak.”

In addition, the expert said it’s possible the redness seen on Michael’s skin could be a reaction to cancer-treatment drugs. “It’s called Cetuximab … and it’s used for head and neck cancer,” said Dr. Spunberg. “It causes rashes. You get a redness of the skin and an acne-like rash. It works as an immunological treatment.”

The 5'11" actor’s weight has also plunged from 175 pounds to 139 in mere months. At the time of our report, a source said doctors were “secretly weighing whether emergency treatment can save his life.”

According to the insider, Michael — seen here at a tribute later that same day honoring the actor — has undergone new radiation treatment. In 2010, gutsy Michael almost died when he was told he had a tumor at the base of his tongue. He endured eight grueling weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. One expert warned that Michael’s history as a heavy smoker and drinker put his risk of cancer recurrence at “about 50 percent.”

While in remission, Michael bounced back with his Emmy Award–winning portrayal of showman Liberace in the 2013 HBO movie “Behind the Candelabra.” But his nightmare is back with a vengeance! This new medical drama is devastating Catherine, 46, who has bipolar disorder. “She went through this in 2010,” lamented the insider. “But this time, she knows he may not survive. It’s hard to cheat death twice!”
