Mark Harmon's health crisis is leading to big changes on "NCIS" — with his character of Jethro Gibbs considering a cushy desk job after a new crisis! Insiders told The National ENQUIRER that they feared the former UCLA quarterback was on his last legs after losing at least 20 pounds — just as "NCIS" producers set up a plot twist that could get Gibbs off the streets and behind a desk!

An upcoming episode called "What Lies Above" reportedly features the return of Congresswoman Jenna Flemming, as she tries to get Director Leon Vance (played by Rocky Carroll) to run for political office. A previous episode saw Flemming telling Gibbs that a position in the "big chair" was also in his future. The change on the show would give its star a role with a lot less action — on a set that's already haunted by the death of another "NCIS" player!

The "NCIS" cast and crew was stunned in Sept. 2016 when creator Gary Glasberg (at right, in glasses) died in his sleep at only 50 years old. “Mark was shaken to his core by Gary’s untimely death,” said an "NCIS" insider. “Not long after, Mark talked it over with his wife Pam [Dawber] and vowed to seriously consider making the next season his last!” Meanwhile, even his fans had noted the change in Harmon's appearance — turning to social media with statements like "Take some time off!" and "Gibbs needs a vacation!"

Mark's pals agree, with one insider telling The ENQUIRER: “Mark needs to rest and take time for himself, before he ends up just like his dad!” said an insider. Tom Harmon was a champion athlete, WWII hero, and noted sports broadcaster when he collapsed from a fatal heart attack in 1990 after winning a golf tournament at the Bel-Air Country Club.

Reps for Mark, now 65, insist that there's nothing wrong with the star's health or spirits — but insiders say he has reason to believe he’ll die early like his famous dad. “Given Mark’s family history,” said an insider, “I’m afraid it’s just a matter of time for him now!”
