Burt Reynolds took pride in doing his own stunts in hit films like "Smokey and the Bandit," "Deliverance," and "Hooper" — but now he needs a stuntman in a Burt Reynolds mask just to be seen walking down a boardwalk. That's the sad sight that was captured by The National ENQUIRER on the set of "The Last Movie Star."

Life cruelly imitates art in the film, with Burt playing a former movie star who, as producers say, "is forced to face the reality that his glory days are far behind him." The actor looked barely able to stand alongside costar Ariel Winter (of "Modern Family" fame), cast as a free spirit hired to drive Burt's character around his hometown.

The ENQUIRER previously caught Burt Reynolds reliving past glories while promoting the new "Bandit" Trans Am — but the crippled "Smokey and the Bandit" star had to lean on the car that he once raced! Sadly, Burt admits that his own years as a movie star caught up with him. "I did all my own stunts," said Burt, "which is why I can't walk very well now."

Longtime fans were also shocked when Burt made the rounds of talk shows in 2015 while plugging his new tell-all "But Enough About Me." Eyewitnesses were stunned and saddened to see Burt struggling to make his way in and out of the studio for an appearance on "Live! with Kelly and Michael," while the studio audience awkwardly waited through Burt's long stroll to the couch after his introduction.

"Burt has terrible problems with his back," an insider told The ENQUIRER, "but he's insisting that he's okay once he's sitting down." Sadly, Burt now spends his off-camera time on the "Dog Years" set by sitting in a wheelchair.

Burt's frail body was wracked by more than stunts, though — with The ENQUIRER reporting in 2009 that the star was found semiconscious and covered in blood after a fall at his Florida home. While being treated in a hospital emergency room, he behaved so bizarrely he was taken to a county mental health facility. The facility refused to release Burt unless he agreed to enter drug and alcohol rehab.

The “Semi-Tough” star had been abusing booze and prescription drugs — mainly painkillers — following back surgery a few years earlier. He also developed an addiction to the sleeping pill Halcion in the ’80s when he battled pain from a jaw problem. Said one friend: "The poor guy’s been through the wringer!"

Burt's rep Erik Kritzer, however, told The ENQUIRER: "Burt has just finished shooting 2 movies and 4 personal appearances working 8 hours a day. He is now shooting a film in which he stars in entitled 'Dog Years'… he is working 4 weeks on this 6 days a week. His character is an old actor who uses a wheelchair sometimes … that is why someone is reporting that he is in a chair."
