Alexis Arquette — the transgendered actress who was once brother/sister-in-law to Courteney Cox — shocked friend and fans with his sudden death on Sept. 11, 2016, at the age of 46. "None of us knew that she had gotten so sick," a close pal told The National ENQUIRER, although the actress passed while surrounded by her family. That included her brother David Arquette, Oscar-winning actress Patricia and sister Rosanna. Patricia issued a statement that Alexis (born as Robert) had passed away surrounded by her siblings as they serenaded her with a song by David Bowie. But while the flamboyant Hollywood actress was beloved for her outspoken ways, she also died feeling betrayed by the gay community!

"She was really serious about going back to being a man," said the insider. "Her career just wasn't making her happy, but she was also terrified of how she'd lose her gay audience. She'd had some success as a male actor, and was bitter over how she was being treated in the gay community. She felt ignored — but Alexis had already burned so many bridges!"

That included The ENQUIRER catching Alexis blasting former "Will & Grace" star Sean Hayes, who beat him out for the role of Jack McFarland. A mocking Alexis said: "Sean's probably got enough money to buy all our homes, but he has to play this dorky fag all the time!"

Her blabbermouth reputation also took a hit when she let it slip that his brother David was going to have a child with his then-wife Courteney Cox — and later revealed their failed other attempts at a second child. (As reported by The ENQUIRER's Mike Walker, though, Courteney would still often give Alexis plenty of her old clothes!)

The friend added that Alexis (seen here with sister Rosanna) had also become withdrawn from her friends in the gay community. "She had gotten caught up in more Hollywood drama," the source told The ENQUIRER. "She didn't talk about being sick, but told us she needed to concentrate on being with her family."

That included her sister Patricia — who, while starring in the TV show "Medium," said of her brother-turned-sister: "I can't say that I really understand it...I did feel a sadness."

Alexis' friend washeartened to see Patricia making amends with her sister at the end: "Alexis used to feel embarrassed that she was the only sibling who never got to work with Patricia on her show. It means a lot to us that Patricia stepped up to make the family's official announcement about Alexis' death!"
