While the atmosphere was festive, and included Hollywood royalty Patrick Stewart and Denzel Washington as guests, some realized this might be the last time many would ever see the Oscar winner — who became the first black man to win an Academy Award for his leading role in the 1963 film “Lilies of the Field.”

After suffering a horrific tumble three years ago at his home, which left the “Raisin in the Sun” actor with his head heavily bandaged and in a wheelchair, family and friends have been keeping a watchful eye over Sidney.

“He hit his head quite badly and everyone was worried he had a serious concussion or some serious brain injury,” says a spy. “Poor circulation in his legs and severe back problems have plagued him for years. His family is terrified he’ll trip and fall again and sustain a life-threatening injury.”

The actor already overcame a serious health crisis in 1993 when he beat prostate cancer. But his current condition is cause for grave concern. “Listen, everybody is worried about Sidney,” said the pal. “He’s one of the few Hollywood legends left and we don’t want to lose him. Right now, we’re taking it one day at a time with him. The rest is up to God!”
