“It’s almost unthinkable that the plane would have been hit without that kind of treacherous sabotage,” said a highly placed British counterterrorism expert. The bolt hit the jet’s nose cone — just inches away from vital radar navigation equipment — and sent at least 30 million volts through the fuselage.

“Luckily, a fire wall had been built around the navigation equipment and a tragedy was averted,” according to a security expert. “If that equipment had been compromised, the plane — and everyone on it — would have been lost.”

The conductors would likely have been inserted by terrorists well acquainted with the plane’s flight plan and security patterns. “They would have also needed advance notice of the route and weather patterns,” the expert said. “It would have been well planned.”

Officials are calling the chilling midair mishap “an accident,” but at least one expert labeled the statement a standard misdirection tactic. “The authorities will put out a false narrative,” said Gary Moskowitz, a Jewish Defense League counterterrorism expert who was trained in Israel.
