A close friend of Nicole's sister Denise told The National ENQUIRER about how her family soon learned that O.J.'s ex-wife had died at the hands of her longtime tormenter. "After Nicole was murdered," said the insider, "her family went through her belongings and found her personal diaries. Some entries were in a notebook, others were on sheets of paper."

"Reading the diaries made them sick," said the family friend. "For the first time, they realized the extent of her abuse, a secret that she had taken to the grave. The family turned the diaries over to the police and the prosecutors."

"In one diary entry," revealed the friend, "Nicole wrote:'Beat me badly, in the wine closet'...and in one of the most shocking entries, she wrote that O.J. had beaten her up when they made love!" Over the years, many experts on domestic violence have said the savagery of Nicole's murder was typical of domestic violence — with abusive men stalking their exes before eventually shooting or stabbing them in brutal fits of rage.

The vicious manner in which Nicole and Ron were killed also had a lasting effect on O.J.'s children. A source told The ENQUIRER about the day when Nicole and O.J.'s daughter Sydney had to learn of her mother's brutal death. "Sydney overheard a stranger saying her father was accused of killing her mother with a knife," revealed a friend.

The little girl turned to her maternal grandmother Juditha, whom she called "Dita." Sydney asked, "Dita, how did Mommy die?" "My heart sank," Juditha told her friend. But, advised to be honest, Juditha told the truth: "I told her someone took a knife and cut her mother's throat. It was one of the hardest things I've had to do since burying Nicole."
