Maksim Chmerkovskiy is putting on a brave face from his hospital bed, but there's a heartbreaking secret behind the injury that he suffered while practicing a spin with celebrity partner Heather Morris. The "Dancing With the Stars" favorite had to be coerced to come back to dance with the former "Glee" star — after declaring that he was taking time off to be with his kid. "Good Morning America" showed the shocking footage from March 24 that explained Maksim's absence from competition. Maksim insisted in 2016 that he had “zero interest in coming back as a dancer” for the next season, as he and Peta Murgatroyd awaited the birth of their first child. “The baby comes in January, and then a month-and-a-half later, I would have to be in L.A. to start training with somebody else,” said Maks.

“I really don’t care how this comes across,” he said, “but there’s no money on the planet that can replace me missing out the three, four, five months of my baby’s life. Zero chance.” But instead, Maksim signed on for the new season and gave up his dreams of being a stay-at-home dad. Now he's far from his family, but still swearing that he's busy "getting un-broken!"
