Frank Houston, the late father of Hillsong Church co-founder Brian Houston, confessed to his son in 1999 he’d molested a seven-year-old boy in Australia over two years, beginning in 1969. The victim claimed Frank came into his room “nearly every night of the week,” while staying at the victim’s family home during a visit to Sydney. Brian later paid a $10,000 settlement to the victim, but also told him, “It’s your fault all this happened — you tempted my father.” Frank was accused of sex abuse eight more times before dying of a stroke in 2004, but none of the sickening assaults were reported to the authorities at the time they occurred.

An Australian commission investigated the stomach-churning allegations against the elder Houston in 2015 and found Brian had failed to report his father’s heinous acts. While Hillsong has denied it’s a cult, detractors have often drawn the sinister comparison, noting “its focus on charismatic preachers, song-based performances,” and pushy demands for cash.
