"Life is better when you're rich," laughed Hillerman, who passed away in Houston from natural causes. The popular actor, who described himself as a "confirmed bachelor" during his hit "Magnum" run in the '80s, wasn't shy about how he was struggling before he got the call to work with
Tom Selleck. "I lived in a cold-water walk-up flat on New York's Lower East Side," he said, recalling that he could barely afford the rent.

"It was a miserable existence," said Hillerman — who loved his Cadillac ("I had it shipped over to Hawaii with me"), Beluga caviar, and, most of all, the privacy of a lush Hawaiian estate before his return to Texas. Hillerman took his final big-screen bow in a TV tribute, as well, wrapping up his career as a doctor in 1996's "A Very Brady Sequel."
