The former Miami prosecutor oversaw a political debacle early in her career as Attorney General after agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms raided the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas. The ATF officials were fired on while trying to execute a search warrant to the religious group.

Waco Standoff Ends in Explosion
Four agents and six Branch Davidian members died in the resulting gunfire. A 51-day standoff ensued — ending with Reno sending in an FBI assault team on April 19, 1993, that killed 76 church members, including David Koresh, two pregnant women, and 12 kids under the age of 5.

Reno was also responsible for sending in armed agents to send 5-year-old Elian Gonzalez back to Cuba, after he had been rescued after his mother drowned while trying to escape Cuba for the shores of Miami. Elian's uncle was willing to care for him in Miami, but Reno ordered in troops who seized Elian at gunpoint and returned him to Cuba.

After her controversial years in Washington, Reno returned to Florida and made an unsuccessful election bid for governor in 2002 but lost in a Democratic primary marred by voting problems. She then retired from politics and continued to make regular appearances giving speeches. Reno also made a brief return to the spotlight to play herself in a 2013 episode of "The Simpsons."
