John (pictured here with his dad) said that he was adopted at 16 months old by Ira Dee Smith, brother of Elvis’ mother Gladys Smith Presley, and his wife Etta, and brought up in Shreveport, La. But he never knew he was tied by blood to Elvis until age 27, when he met his biological mom Zona Marie Roach!

That explained all the times that John had been been told: “You look like Elvis! You sound like him!” Zona explained to her son that she was a nursing student when she had a brief fling with Elvis in late 1960 — and the King was present at his birth in Edinburg, Texas, in July 1961!

John said he met Elvis in the flesh half a dozen times — and always when he was around his adopted dad Ira Dee, who performed in the Deep South Quartet along with Elvis. “I remember being about seven and on stage in Chicago where Elvis grabbed my hand and held on to it,” he said. “I was thrilled, but I didn’t think much of it, because I always thought Ira was my real dad."
