LATEST!!! EDWARDS TRIAL DEFENSE RESTS!

JOHN EDWARDS defense lawyers have rested its case Wednesday in his corruption trial.

No more witnesses will be called.

Closing arguments are scheduled to begin tomorrow.

Jury deliberations will likely begin on Friday.

PREVIOUSLY:

Despite JOHN EDWARDS defense team placing the disgraced pol, his daughter Cate and mistress RIELLE HUNTER on the witness list, it is unlikely they will ever be called to testify.

The John Edwards conspiracy trial appears to be winding down without testimony, so far, from the 2008 presidential candidate nor mistress Rielle Hunter.

Edwards’ defense attorney Abbe Lowell told Judge Catherine Eagles the defense may rest its case today by rolling out their big names but Beltway insiders say that Hunter is too flaky, Cate is “daddy’s little girl” and Edwards a proven liar who would have to endure a grueling cross examination by feds.

More likely, they’ll recall the prosecution’s lead witness, former Edwards loyalist Andrew Young who hid Hunter from media while pretending to be the father of Edwards’ love child.

As The ENQUIRER first reported in a series of world exclusives –first exposing the affair and then the hush money cover up — Edwards used $1 million in presidential campaign funds from two key donors late Dallas money man Fred Baron, and 102 year-old Listerine heiress Rachel “Bunny” Mellon to fund a conspiracy of silence.

Prosecution has trotted out a panoply of witnesses and evidence outlining the money trail as Edwards defense team employs the old “Hogan Heroes” Defense stratagem: "I KNOW NOTHING!"

EDWARDS TRIAL: ELIZABETH’s RAGE WAS “VOLCANIC”

Several of the finance witnesses the defense has called even bolstered the prosecution case.

Edwards has pleaded not guilty to six criminal counts including conspiracy to violate the Federal Election Campaign Act, accepting contributions that exceeded federal limits, and filing false campaign-finance statements.

If he were running in the 2012 election, under new laws, a JOHN EDWARDS SUPER-PAC could have issued payoffs without ever disclosing who the donors were nor what the campaign funds are used for.

Closing arguments begin tomorrow.

STAY TUNED………
