CBS chief foreign correspondent LARA LOGAN was brutally attacked and sexually assaulted by an Egyptian mob the day Mubarak stepped down, the network confirmed today.

CBS reported that last Friday February 11, the same day Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak stepped down, correspondent Lara Logan was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for 60 MINUTES.

Suddenly, Logan and her camera team were  surrounded by a  mob of Egyptians  — more than 200 people — whipped into frenzy.

In the crushing undercurrent of the mob swell, Logan  was separated from her crew.

The popular TV correspondent was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating.

CBS says she was saved by a group of women and a phalanx of 20 Egyptian soldiers who beat the berserk mob back.

She was reunited with her news team, escorted back to the hotel base camp and fled to United States on the first flight out in the morning.

Lara is currently in the hospital recovering from her ordeal.

"There will be no further comment from CBS News and Correspondent Logan and her family respectfully request privacy at this time" the network release said.
