Katie Couric returned to NBC to cover the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics — prompting industry insiders to claim the ambitious ex-anchor is determined to replace Hoda Kotb and regain her former morning show glory!

Less than three months after Matt Lauer was fired in November over a series of sick sex scandals, longtime producer pal Don Nash announced that he was stepping down to spend more time with family.

A media mole refers to Nash as “very much entrenched in Lauer’s legacy,” though Nash denied having knowledge of Matt’s lecherous ways.

“Matt and Don are out of the picture,” said an entertainment insider, “and suddenly ­Katie comes back. This has to be by design. Her new Olympic gig is not a coincidence!”

While Couric made millions after leaving “Today” in 2006, her reputation was tarnished by a series of high-profile flops. Insiders say she’s eyeing a return to Today — and the Olympics job gets her foot in the door!

“Katie was the first lady of ‘Today’ for many years,” dished an insider, “and now she has a clear shot at replacing  Hoda and regaining her place as top dog — without sharing the spotlight with Lauer!”
