PRESIDENT Barack Obama is caught up in a bombshell cheating scandal with high-powered politico Caroline Kennedy – and first lady Michelle Obama is furious!

In the latest explosion to rock the Obamas’ troubled marriage, sources tell The ENQUIRER that Michelle angrily accused Caroline, now U.S. Ambassador to Japan, of publicly humiliating her during the president’s recent diplomatic trip there.

Obama, 52, traveled without his wife, and during his visit, a top Japanese government official blasted Michelle and ripped the first couple’s marriage, triggering her fury, sources say.

“The politician exposed secrets about Obama’s cheating and Michelle’s reckless spending,” a top Washington, D.C., source told The ENQUIRER.

“Michelle felt completely embarrassed by his comments. Even worse, she wasn’t there to defend herself, and she believes Caroline failed in her role as ambassador to speak up and set the record straight.

“Michelle was so angry over the whole fiasco that she ended up walking out of the White House and checking into a hotel in Virginia to cool her heels.”

Another political insider added: “Michelle went ballistic over the cheating scandal that erupted while Barack was in Japan. When she saw photos of Barack and Caroline looking close – and sharing a kiss – it made her even angrier.

“Michelle suspects Barack of having an affair with every woman he’s alone with, especially if it’s a woman he finds attractive. She also knows Caroline and Barack share a mutual admiration for each other.”

Caroline’s ringing endorsement helped Obama win the White House in 2008 after she compared his ability to connect with people to her late father, President John F. Kennedy.

“We haven’t had a leader who could ignite that spark, but we do now,” the Camelot princess said.

And, in a “New York Times” op-ed piece supporting Obama in 2008, Caroline wrote: “I have never had a president who inspired me the way people tell me that my father inspired them. But for the first time, I believe I have found the man who could be that president – not just for me, but for a new generation of Americans.”

The political insider added: “Caroline has gushed about Barack for years in public, and it’s also clear she’s personally fond of him. She puts him on a pedestal, and it’s believed they were able to spend a significant amount of private time together on the Japan trip.

“Michelle believes, rightly or wrongly, her husband is just as smitten with Caroline, and that’s partly why he gave her the plum job of ambassador to Japan.”

Meanwhile, 56-year-old mom-of-three Caroline – who’s aware of Michelle’s trust issues with Barack – insisted that her husband, Ed Schlossberg, fly in from their New York home for Obama’s visit.

Still, the trip became immersed in controversy when the Japanese official’s blistering remarks about the Obamas sparked an international scandal. The drama unfolded after Kazuyuki Hamada, a member of Japan’s parliament, noted Michelle’s absence and blamed it on a marital rift.

“It is an open secret that the pair are already negotiating their divorce, and that they are waiting for his term in office to be over, and then they’ll separate,” Hamada wrote on his official blog on April 5.

Hamada then blasted Michelle for gallivanting  around the globe on the U.S. taxpayers’ dime.

“If you ask the president, he will tell you, ‘I can’t show my face to the voters after how she’s spent so much money,’” Hamada wrote.

“On the other hand, if you get his wife to talk, she’ll tell you, ‘The president is a pathological philanderer. He uses the Secret Service for this, and has used them to hide evidence that he’s a cheater.’”

When Michelle heard about Hamada’s remarks, “she went crazy,” said the political insider. “She told pals, ‘Caroline Kennedy should have discredited this guy’s nonsense immediately. That’s her job. But there wasn’t a peep out of her!’ ”

To make Michelle even more steamed, publications around the globe claimed Hamada was citing The ENQUIRER’s reporting.

In a series of blockbuster articles, we have quoted sources saying the 50-year-old first lady has met with divorce lawyers and plans to lead a separate life from her husband after they leave the White House.

The ENQUIRER has also reported how Michelle has told pals she’s found a new home in D.C. for herself and the couple’s daughters – Malia, 15, and Sasha, 12.

Obama reportedly plans to settle in his native Hawaii, where he’ll live with his longtime pal Bobby Titcomb, who was busted for soliciting a prostitute in 2011.

Sources have further told us that Michelle was outraged when she learned the Secret Service had been covering up Obama’s cheating with at least two different women.

AND The ENQUIRER recently revealed that the Obamas waged their worst fight ever over Michelle’s recent lavish trip to China. When advisers said the couple’s vacation tab would top the $150 million mark, Obama begged her to cancel the visit.

But Michelle – still seething over Barack snapping a “selfie” with Denmark’s sexy blonde prime minister and openly ogling actresses Gabrielle Union and Kerry Washington of TV’s “Scandal” – ignored his pleas.

Furious over the drama in Japan, Michelle stormed out of the White House and checked into a hotel while Obama was on his eight-day Asian trip, said the first source. According to published reports, the first lady spent a quiet weekend at the tony Salamander Resort in Middleburg, Va., with her daughters.

But the insider notes that Michelle did it to ring up another unnecessary tab at taxpayer expense, knowing it would infuriate her husband. And since the resort often hosts political bigwigs, including members of the Kennedy clan, she was also sending a message to Caroline that she’s nobody’s fool.

Said the insider: “Caroline won’t miss the point.”
