GREGG ALLMAN is crying on the shoulder of his ex-wife CHERr after breaking up with his beautiful young fiancée.

But friends tell The ENQUIRER the rock legend has a secret motive for pouring out his heart to Cher – he wants to get back together with her!

Six-times-married Allman, 65, recently revealed that his year-long, live-in relationship with 24-year-old Shannon Williams is over – and pals say the first thing he did was phone the “If I Could Turn Back Time” singer.

He’s remained close to Cher – mother of his son Elijah Blue – even though she accused him of heavy drug use when their four-year marriage went down in flames in 1979.

“GREGG REALLY BELIEVES that they would have a great chance of making it work a second time around now that he’s clean and sober and Cher’s career has slowed down,” a source told The ENQUIRER. “He’s always loved Cher and never really got over their split.”

This isn’t the first time the diva has come to Gregg’s rescue.

Two years ago, The ENQUIRER reported exclusively that she ended years of hard feelings toward her ex-husband to help him through a liver transplant. The star of the Allman Brothers Band had been on a waiting list for an organ since starting treatment for hepatitis C in 2007.

“When Cher found out that Gregg was finally having the surgery, she immediately called to make sure he was going to be all right,” revealed a source close to the 66-year-old Grammy and Oscar winner.

To help him win his battle, Cher suggested herbal remedies to strengthen his immune system.

“He really appreciated her kind and thoughtful advice,” said the source.

Now Gregg is reeling once again. Recently, he told a TV interviewer : “This time I am really in love,” and revealed that Shannon would be his bride.

Then he suddenly announced that the romance had fizzled and is said to be taking the breakup hard. But friends are betting Cher can get him back to his old self.

Noted the source: “Cher understands Gregg like no one else, and he knows that.”
