The attack began shortly after a fireworks display came to an end at 11 p.m. local time — with the crowd beginning to head home before becoming targets for the demented act of terrorism.

ISIS leaders had called for a similar attack to be carried out on France. Local reports said that the driver of the truck was Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel — who had a criminal record, but wasn't on any terrorist watch list.

“The individual who was driving the truck has been neutralized,” said Interior Ministry spokesman, Pierre-Henry Brandet. “The investigation will determine if he acted alone.”

Some victims of the attack were taken to the nearby Casino Du Palais De La Mediterranee for treatment by EMT personnel. Another planned fireworks display for Friday evening in the city of Marseille has been canceled.
