‘Star Wars’ Comes Home With Premiere In London
“Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens” unleashed its London premiere last night in Leicester Square, and a galaxy of stars from the cast turned out — in Force! “Star Wars” creator George Lucas — who had only a very limited role in this latest installment of the franchise — said of the European premiere, “It's like coming home to an event we've done for the last 40 years, but this is the biggest by far."

Newcomer Daisy Ridley, who plays the new heroine Rey, certainly cleaned up nicely now that she’s off that dusty desert planet! The glamorous new star shouted to the crowd as she arrived: “May the Force be with you all!” She added: “I'm a girl from London — it's good be home."

Another new hero, John Boyega, who plays lightsaber-wielding former stormtrooper Finn, changed looks again, this time swapping his white armor and weapons for a dapper blue tuxedo.

Even the usually grumpy Harrison Ford appeared to be having a good time greeting the throngs of fans before the screening — the slightly grayer Han Solo even gave out a few autographs.

Carrie Fisher is playing an older and wiser version of Princess Leia, but Carrie — who over the years since 1977 has become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand script doctors and a best-selling writer — still seems as excited as a kid to be premiering another “Star Wars” installment.

Lupita Nyong’o’s character, Maz Kanata, is entirely CGI, so the Oscar-winning actress performed her role in a motion-capture suit. Luckily, mo-cap superstar Andy Serkis was also doing his thing (playing the CGI character Supreme Leader Snoke) and offered the “12 years a Slave” star some acting-via-computer tips!

Protocol droid C-3PO is fluent in over 6 million forms of communication, but his portrayer, Anthony Daniels, seems to be having a bit of trouble understanding paparazzi!

Kenny Baker, who portrayed the loyal little astromech droid R2-D2 in the six previous films, made an appearance.
Adorable rolling droid BB-8 has already been declared the breakout character of the film, thanks to previews featuring the feisty mechanical marvel. Daisy filmed her very first scenes with the soccer ball-like droid and looks at it as a costar!

Director J.J. Abrams appeared to do his best C-3PO impression for the crowd. J.J., who also co-wrote and co-produced, said it was "an enormous relief" to finally let everyone see the highly secretive film.

The man who started it all, George Lucas, was clad in his trademark flannel and accompanied by his wife, Mellody Hobson. George said that having the European premiere in London is like "coming home. All of the premieres have always been in London.”
