County Sheriff Brian Gootkin held a press conference the next day to reveal that Gianforte had been booked on charges of assault, and has a court date coming up in June.

But even as the announcement was made, Montana residents were going to the polls and electing the embattled politician to Congress! He won by over 20 percentage points over his Democratic opponent at the polls. "When you make a mistake you have to own up to it," Gianforte said during his victory speech. "That's the Montana way. Last night I made a mistake...That's not the person I am, and it's not the way I'll lead in this state."
