Cameron, his son by first wife Diandra, is now serving five years at a minimum-security prison camp in Pennsylvania on drug charges.
"Michael felt he had to be brutally honest with his kids about his cancer because he was afraid they’d hear about it at school anyway," said a source close to the star.
"It’s heartbreaking that we lost as many years as we did," Michael said of his once-strained relationship with his eldest son, Cam.
Despite the unfortunate situation, Michael added that he’s glad Cameron is finally clean and sober.
He’s determined to make up for the years he wasn’t there for him – and to make sure that never happens with his younger kids, says the source.
"Only time will tell if he can beat this thing."
