The late SOPRANOS star JAMES GANDOLFINI had planned to divorce, begging his ex to reunite.

JAMES GANDOLFINI’s second marriage was on the rocks, and in the last weeks of his life he begged his former fiancée to reunite with him!

But “The Sopranos” star’s ex-lover, Lora Somoza, wasn’t interested, a source says. The beloved actor went into a tragic downward spiral that ended with his death in Rome at age 51.

“James never fell out of love with Lora, and he was desperate to reconcile with her,” revealed a close source.

“Two weeks before he died, he reached out to her in a long and emotional phone call. He wanted to get back with her and begged her to see him in Los Angeles.

“But Lora made it clear to James that she’s involved in a steady relationship, and it crushed him. He was becoming more and more despondent, drinking and packing on the pounds.” The Emmy-winning actor had only been going through the motions in his four-year marriage to former model Deborah Lin, who gave birth to their daughter Liliana in October, added the source.

“James loved Liliana and had every intention of being a good dad,” said the source. “But the spark had gone out of his marriage to Deborah. I believe he was going to start shopping for a divorce lawyer, and he wanted the good times he had with Lora again.”

Gandolfini met Lora in 2000 while she was working as an assistant to the director on the set of his movie “The Mexican.”

He was married to his first wife Marcy at the time, and after they divorced in 2002, the actor and Lora got engaged in 2003.

But they split in 2005 when Gandolfini, who’d been in and out of rehab for booze and drugs, fell off the wagon.

“Jim and I talked only two weeks ago,” Lora – who now hosts the weekly sex therapy webcast “Between the Sheets with Lora Somoza” – confirmed to The ENQUIRER. “I will always love him, but I’m very happy with my boyfriend. Still, I am devastated by Jim’s death – because to me, he was invincible.”
