‘VOICE OF GOD’ SILENCED

description

Movie trailer voice-over king Don LaFontaine, 68, dead.

In a career spanning 33 years LaFontaine voiced 5,000 movie trailers, 350,000 commercials and dozens of TV show promos including ER.

Born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1940, LaFontaine teamed with a recording engineer to do radio spots in New York after being discharged from the Army.

Due to a scheduling snafu, Don stepped behind the mike to read copy for Gunfighters of Casa Grande.  To his surprise, MGM preferred his deep sonorous reading and put him to work.

His first assignment was The Godfather Part Two.

LaFontaine wrote most of his own voice-overs with familiar phrases like "a one-man army," "One man, one destiny" and the pop culture catchphrase "In a world where…"

"We have to very rapidly establish the world we are transporting them to," LaFontaine said in an interview.

"That’s very easily done by saying: ‘In a world where … ‘ "
