PAUL REUBENS bow tie wearing manchild in weird fantasyland is returing to the movies and he’s teaming with KNOCKED UP director JUDD APATOW.
Writer/director of The 40 Year Old Virgin, Judd Apatow, a big fan of Reuben’s peculiar hilarity, put the big bike wheels in motion after seeing Pee Wee do his thing at a revival of the classic kidvid show onstage in Los Angeles this past winter.
Reportedly the film is being scripted by the writer of Inglourious Basterds and will take Pee Wee on a "GIGANTIC adventure".
"Let’s face it, the world needs MORE Pee-wee Herman,"’ Apatow told show biz bible Variety.
"I am so excited to be working with Paul Reubens – who is an extraordinary and ground-breaking actor and writer. It’s so great to watch him return with such relevance."
The movie deal follows closely on the heels of the announcement that Pee Wee will take his smash stage revival to the Great White Way for a six-week New York run in November.
Pee Wee’s previous big screen outings were Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (launching Tim Burton‘s directorial career in 1985) and Big Top Pee-wee in 1988.
Reben retired the Emmy winning character in 1990 after 13 eps and was considered box office poison when he was arrested in a Sarasota, Flordia porn movie theater for indecent exposure.
Reubens told the New York Times that the game plan at this stage was to do "reality-based world and a linear road movie" much like the first film but could easily morph into a Playhouse scenario.
"We’ve had some very interesting inquiries already for gigantic superstars," Reubens said.
"It’s hilarious. I wish I could drop a couple names without getting in trouble."
We’ll bet one of them is frequent Apatow star SETH ROGEN.
