Today show co-host Matt Lauer‘s risque humor nearly wrecked Katie Couric‘s star-studded fund-raiser for colon cancer.
Embarrassed Katie gritted her teeth at the gala when Lauer recounted some sexual conquests before he got married, according to sources. Katie organized the $2,500-ahead dinner at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria on March 15 to fight the disease that killed her husband Jay Monahan.
Lauer’s jokes are said to have left the 1,500 guests, including Sting and Whoopi Goldberg, speechless. A report said: “There were odd moments, especially when Katie’s Today show comrade Matt Lauer, going off the cue cards, reminisced about trying to seduce a clueless girl in his apartment while “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” was playing. ‘I can’t believe they made a record out of that raisin commercial,’ the girl told Matt. ‘She was very good looking,’ Matt concluded, as if to say that made up for her not being bright.”
Said an insider: “Many people thought Matt boasting about his love life was inappropriate when it was really a memorial night for Katie’s late husband.”
