SOFIA VERGARA broke off her engagement to businessman Nick Loeb because her grown son didn’t approve of the union, sources tell The ENQUIRER.

Although the red-hot “Modern Family” star claims they split because their work schedules forced them to spend too much time apart, a family friend says Sofia’s 21-year-old son, Manolo, has been urging her for years to dump the hotheaded food marketing whiz.

“Manolo finally got Sofia to open her eyes and realize Nick was no good for her,” confided the friend. “He’s been on his mother’s case to dump Nick from the moment he met him. Manolo never trusted the guy.

“He always believed that Nick had a wandering eye and I think he was convinced he was seeing other women on the sly.”

Sofia, 41, and Nick, 38, first hooked up in 2010. They split in May 2012 – around the same time The ENQUIRER exclusively reported that he was taking part in Viagra- and cocaine-fueled orgies with strippers and hookers. While Loeb's rep enied the claims the couple rekindled their romance and got engaged just two months later.

Manolo – Sofia’s son with her ex-husband Joe Gonzalez – was also concerned about Nick’s “hair-trigger temper,” says the source.

As The ENQUIRER reported in January, he begged his mom to call off the engagement after an ugly melee at a Miami Beach nightclub. Insiders told us Nick went ballistic after someone accidentally spilled a drink on Sofia at a swanky South Beach New Year’s Eve party. The scuffle ended with the Colombian spitfire splayed out on the nightclub floor, with her strapless dress yanked down.

“The cheating scandal and the nightclub incident were only two of many red flags,” added the family friend. “But Sofia was still ready to go through with the marriage.

“Fortunately, Manolo was always there to talk her out of it.”

Now she can’t stop thanking her son for keeping her from walking down the aisle with the wealthy playboy.

“Sofia now sees that marrying Nick would have been a huge mistake,” the friend added. “Manolo saved

her a lot of future heartache.”
