TIM MCGRAW led a drug-crazed double life until wife Faith Hill staged a desperate intervention that saved the country music superstar from an early grave, say insiders.
For years the popular entertainer projected an image as a family man to Faith and their three daughters, but behind the scenes he was living an incredibly destructive existence that led to all-night partying and drugs.
In a shocking interview, Tim recently broke his silence about his darkest days, confessing: “I drank too much. I partied too much. And did other things too much. Chemically. No needles or that kind of stuff … use your imagination.”
The National ENQUIRER learned that the 47-year-old singer’s surprise admission only scratched the surface, and we’ve uncovered the full, frightening story – and discovered how faithful Faith pulled her husband back from the brink of disaster.
“When Tim hit it big in country music in the early 1990s, Nashville was awash in drugs, especially cocaine,” disclosed an insider. “The money was rolling in and it was no secret around Nashville that Tim was a drug user, but when you’re a big star, it gets swept under the rug.
“Tim would drink beer, tequila and whiskey with his pals, and then would use drugs to keep the party going all night.
“He’d be so loaded he’d start flirting with women, or somebody would look at him the wrong way and he’d be ready to start a brawl.
“More than one person saw the road Tim was going down and told him, ‘Son, you’re not living long like this.’”
By 2007, Faith realized Tim was in deep trouble. She gave her husband a stinging ultimatum: Stop the drugs and alcohol or I’ll leave and take our daughters!
“She wasn’t going to stand by while he killed himself,” said a close source.
“Tim begged Faith not to leave him – and within days, he quit drugs and alcohol cold turkey!
“Faith began calling the shots in his life and staged an intervention – telling him what he needed to do if he wanted to keep his family together.”
Tim is deeply grateful to his wife and admits that through his darkest days she “kept me alive,” and he adds that without her support, “I’d be dead. I would have partied too hard.” Happily for the singer and 46-year-old Faith, Tim has been clean and sober since 2008 and their marriage has lasted more than 17 years.
