Michael Crichton, best selling author and film director, gone at 66.

The million selling author of Jurassic Park and The Andromeda Strain died in Los Angeles after a lengthy battle with cancer,

"Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand," his family stated.

Many of Crichton’s books became the basis of films and as a director he also unleashed Westworld, The Great Train Robbery The 13th Warrior, Coma, Physical Evidence and Runaway.

Crichton also created the long running ER TV series.

"Michael was a gentle soul who reserved his flamboyant side for his novels," Steven Spielberg mourned.

"There is no one in the wings that will ever take his place."
