STEVE LANDESBERG best known for his role on the long running cop series Barney Miller has passed from cancer.

Steve, 65, who recently starred in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, succumbed after a brave battle.

"It is with great sadness to report the loss of my friend and client Steve Landesberg," his agent Jeffrey Leavitt told The Hollywood Reporter

Landensberg, 65, passed away Friday morning from cancer, after a prolonged fight with the disease.

The rangy actor, was best known for playing uber-intellectual and often patronizing "Arthur Dietrich" on  Barney Miller which aired from 1975-1982.

Among his many movie/ TV creds were Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Cosby, and Seinfeld.

Costar Michael McKean Tweeted Steve was a "friendly and funny good guy."

"He was a wonderful comic and superb actor who gave so much of himself in every performance," said Shirley Jones.

"I’m not really much like Dietrich," Steve told the Washington Post in 1979. "He reads everything. Science, technology, economics. I have no interest in that stuff.… I try to play him as a cop. Intellectual and funny, but a good cop."

Landesberg also said police officers "tell me they know guys like Dietrich –most cops never fire their guns. That’s why they like our show."
