Rock legend JOAN JETT goes ballistic over cover LP and she’s enlisted ex-Runaways gal pal CHERIE CURRIE  in her all-out legal war!

For Joan Jett, love is a legal battlefield as she charges that an ex-employee is assembling a tribute album without her permission.

The singer-guitarist and 1970s bandmate Cherie Currie sued yesterday in an attempt to stop  "Take It or Leave It: A Tribute to the Queens of Noise," a supposed homage to The Runaways, the punk bank that launched their careers and broke down the walls of sexism.

The two-disc LP features Runaways songs covered by Japanese pop-punk band Shonen Knife to David Johansen, of the ‘70s glam-rock Andy Warhol fave-raves The New York Dolls, according to the LP’s promotional site.

The Runaways, the subject of a recent 2010 biopic starring Kirsten Stewart and Dakota Fanning, chart-busters  included sex fest "Cherry Bomb" and "Queens of Noise."

The lawsuit charges indie label Main Man Records used their names and likenesses to promo the LP without permission.

Joan’s lawsuit also charges that a Main Man staffer worked at Jett's record label and used THAT connection to claim the release had Jett's blessing.

Jett and Currie ultimately just "want them to stop," said their lawyer, Oren J. Warshavsky.

"This isn't about money. This is strictly about preserving reputation and quality that both Joan and Cherie are known for."
