A nonverbal autistic girl was safely rescued in Florida earlier this month after she was found on a rocky beach behind near a construction site behind a hotel, police said.

The Clearwater Police Department on Saturday shared body-worn camera video of the May 10 rescue, carried out by Officer Andrew Billups. The officer responded to a report of a missing 8-year-old girl, who is autistic and nonverbal, who was reported to be near the Gulf Coast beach.

“The situation was especially urgent, as the young girl did not know how to swim,” police said. “After a thorough search, Officer Billups found her hidden among the rocks in the water behind a hotel near a construction site.”

The video shows Billups searching the area, where an embankment of jagged rocks meets the ocean. A flash of bright pink stands out just at the water’s edge, and he quickly climbs down to reach her. He calls out to her and holds out his hand, and she immediately takes it and follows him to safety. The girl was quickly reunited with her family.

“We’re grateful for his quick response and dedication to keeping out community safe,” police said.
