As hurricane season approaches, Thrive Pet Healthcare is urging pet owners to prepare in advance to ensure the safety and well-being of their furry companions.

With the official start of hurricane season on June 1, Tony Coronado, Vice President of Emergency Medicine at Thrive Pet Healthcare, a nationwide network of veterinary service providers and hospitals, has shared essential veterinarian-recommended supplies that every pet owner should have ready.

“Hurricanes are known to cause power outages, delayed prescriptions, and temporary closures of veterinary hospitals,” Coronado says. “Having the necessary supplies available can make a big difference in reducing anxiety for you and your pet.”

Coronado recommends a comprehensive list of supplies, including a one-week supply of both bottled water and non-perishable pet food, and a two-week supply of any regular medications. Pet owners should also have a pet first-aid kit, identification tags, and familiar objects like blankets or toys to comfort their pets during stressful times.

For extra medications, visit your veterinarian ahead of an upcoming storm for an additional supply. First aid kits should include gauze pads, adhesive tape, antiseptic wipes, saline eye wash, tweezers, a digital thermometer, and, for dogs who may need them, a muzzle.

Additional items include pet waste disposal supplies, a battery-operated flashlight, veterinary records, and current photos of each pet for identification purposes. Coronado advises having a “go-bag” ready for each pet in case of sudden evacuation.

“Most importantly, get your pet accustomed to the car or crate and car travel beforehand,” Coronado says. “This can significantly minimize stress when you need to make a speedy departure from home. Never leave your pets behind when evacuating. Depending on the severity of the storm, they may be alone for several days or weeks.”
