A U.S. woman is facing charges for allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 45 pounds of cocaine into the country from Mexico, officials said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Bridge of the Americas international crossing in El Paso, Texas, encountered a 2016 Hyundai Elantra with a single female occupant arriving from Mexico at around 8 a.m. on Tuesday, and the vehicle was selected for secondary inspection.

A CBP K9 alerted to the presence of narcotics, and an X-ray scan revealed “anomalies” in the vehicles left and right rocker panels. A physical search revealed 19 cocaine-filled bundles weighing a total of 45.2 pounds. Based on values provided by CBP for similar recent seizures, the load of cocaine would have an estimated street value of more than $600,000.

The driver, a U.S. citizen, was arrested and turned over to the El Paso County Sheriffs office to face charges.

“Every day our dedicated CBP workforce stands guard protecting our community from any and all threats,” said CBP El Paso Port Director Ray Provencio. “Our homeland security mission is never ending and every drug load that we prevent from reaching its intended destination makes a difference.”
