U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Wednesday arrested a U.S. citizen allegedly trying to enter the country from Mexico with more than 20 pounds of cocaine.

CBP officers at the Ysleta Port of Entry in El Paso encountered a 2015 Dodge Ram with a single male occupant arriving from Mexico shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday. After a K9 alerted to the presence of narcotics and a low-energy portal scan revealed anomalies in the truck, the vehicle was selected for secondary inspection.

An X-ray scan confirmed the anomalies in the firewall and dashboard area, and a physical search revealed eight bundles in a hidden compartment. The packages contained 20.1 pounds of cocaine.

The driver, a U.S. citizen, was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations special agents to face charges for the importation of a controlled substance.

“The combination of officer experience, canine enforcement, tools and technology all play a role in stopping drugs at our ports of entry,” said CBP Ysleta Port Director Arnie Gomez. “This case illustrates how the various layers of enforcement CBP employs are an effective strategy in stopping contraband at the border.”
