A family is safe and their cat is recovering after a residential fire in South Florida on Sunday, officials said.

The St. Lucie County Fire District said several units responded to a report of a fire in a residential garage on the 1900 block of SW Fears Avenue in Port St. Lucie at around 11 a.m. Sunday. Firefighters quickly got to work containing the fire, and prevented it from reaching the main living area of the home, but the structure sustained significant smoke damage.

Five adults and three children safely escaped the home, officials said, but during a search of the property, firefighters found an unresponsive cat.

Photos shared by the fire department show a firefighter administering oxygen to the cat, using a mask meant for humans that completely covers the feline’s head.

“Were happy to report the cat is now doing well,” the fire department said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
