Notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger was tossed into solitary confinement at his Florida prison last summer when a guard caught him red-handed — masturbating in his cell.

Bulger was fighting his own battle of the bulge when a male guard making his 3 a.m. rounds spotted the inmate. The corrections officer immediately commanded the ex-Southie crime boss to stop, because regulations at the U.S. Penitentiary Coleman II in Sumterville, Fla., prohibit any sexual activity at all by inmates.

As punishment for his predawn solo performance, Bulger was dumped in solitary confinement for 30 days. His commissary and e-mail privileges were revoked for 120 days, and authorities confiscated his personal property for 30 days.

Bulger — who for decades was master of his domain in South Boston — insisted he was only administering medicated powder to his genitals to treat a yeast infection that he felt too embarrassed to report to the prison medical department.

“I ended up with a condition and I’m embarrassed to go to medical because they have female nurses over there,” Bulger said, according to “The Boston Globe.”

An indignant Bulger, who is serving a life sentence for participating in 11 murders, apparently drew the line at self-pleasuring!

“I’ve never had any charges like that in my whole life,” Bulger told a disciplinary hearing in June. “I’m 85 years old. My sex life is over.

“I volunteer to take a polygraph test to prove my answer to this charge,” Bulger added.

But the hearing officer was not impressed and rejected Bulger’s explanation, writing, “The action/behavior on the part of any inmate to engage in a sexual act interferes with the orderly running of the institution.”

Bulger appealed the case — but since he has already served the punishment, the only benefit to having the appeal upheld would be removing the incident from his permanent record.

Bulger was sent to a special housing unit, where he was locked up for 23 hours a day and let out for just one hour of recreation. How Bulger relaxed and let off steam during the 23 hours he spent alone was anyone’s guess.

Bulger’s attorney, Hank Brennan, kept his mouth shut, declining comment.

The corrections officer reported that he stopped by Bulger’s cell on June 1 and saw him touching his exposed genitals with his left hand.

Bulger claimed he was set up — because when the guard surprised him during his self-administered medical treatment, the guard hollered, “I got you!”
