The driver of a semi-truck was killed in a fiery crash that closed Interstate 5 in Washington early Tuesday morning, officials said.

A semi-truck struck a barrier on I-5 near South 84th Street in Tacoma at around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, rolled over and burst into flames. The driver of the truck was killed in the crash, Washington State Patrol Trooper John Dattilo confirmed.

West Pierce Fire and Rescue responded to the scene to extinguish the blaze. I-5 was closed in both directions while first responders put out the fire and worked to investigate the cause of the crash.

Datillo said in an update at around 7:45 a.m. that Washington Department of Transportation officials were treating the road surface on the southbound side of I-5, “hoping to reopen several lanes shortly.” The northbound lanes remained fully closed.

WSDOT advised motorists to seek alternate routes while the investigation and cleanup continued. Traffic was diverted off nearby exits. The agency told drivers to expect an “extended” closure.
