The bomb went off at the intersection of 42nd Street and West 8th Avenue in Times Square, as thousands of commuters were beginning their work week. Police confirmed the arrest of 27-year-old Akayed Ullah — seen here at the scene. Police also reported that the suspect is the only person injured in the bombing, suggesting that his explosive device detonated early.

Times Square was also the target of a terrorist attack on May 1, 2010, when a failed car bomb was discovered in a car. Connecticut resident Faisal Shahzad [pictured] was later arrested on a plane departing to Dubai. On October 5, 2010, he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Sources report that Ullah — pointed out in this video — is a native of Bangladesh, and had been living in Brooklyn. Police said that he was armed with a pipe bomb wrapped around his waist, and it was meant to be set off with a battery pack. Sources have told the NYPD that the bomber told investigators that he made the device at an electronics company where he's employed.
