“Mary Jo was pregnant by the senator!” declared a source who has doggedly investigated the July 18, 1969 incident, which inspired
the recent well-received film (left). “For a long time, I was very nervous and afraid about coming forward. When Ted Kennedy died, I breathed a sigh of relief.”

The private investigator, who agreed to speak to The ENQUIRER only on the condition of anonymity, said she was terrified to break her silence for fear Ted’s hatchet men would target her, as they had Mary Jo. “I always wondered that these are really powerful people,” the source said.

Her investigation also revealed
David Powers, a man infamous for keeping the Kennedys
out of trouble, was with 28-year-old Mary Jo and Ted in his four-door Oldsmobile! “They were all in the car when it went off the bridge. Ted was driving, and David Powers helped cover this up!” dished the source.

For years, Powers was best known for arranging trysts between Ted’s brother
John F. Kennedy and his legendary mistress, Mafia moll
Judith Campbell Exner. A
contrite Ted followed Powers to the grave on Aug. 25, 2009, at the age of 77 — 11 years after his loyal bagman passed.

Curiously, no official autopsy was performed on Mary Jo’s body and her family rushed her into the grave only a single day after her death! However, a coroner did conduct a post-mortem — and discovered the pregnancy, another insider claimed to The ENQUIRER.

At an inquest following the incident, Ted testified water was rushing in on all sides of the car. But the FBI file quoted the “young local mortician” who prepared Mary Jo’s body for burial as telling an investigator her corpse betrayed none of the telltale signs of a drowning victim.

What’s more, the diver who recovered her lifeless body, John Farrar (left), testified at the inquest he believed Mary Jo survived inside the car in an air pocket for three to four hours and could have been saved if Ted hadn’t waited ten hours to summon help!

Mary Jo had been attending a late-night party that Ted hosted at a cottage (left) on Chappaquiddick Island for the so-called “Boiler Room” girls. The young, politically ambitious women — all unattached — had worked for the presidential campaign of Ted’s brother Bobby the previous year.

Six men, including Ted, were known to be in attendance, all of them married. Powers was also there, but that fact was covered up, according to the source. Ted apparently held Mary Jo — a pretty blonde with a slight build and the prim manner of a devout Catholic girl — in high regard.

After they left the party together, they allegedly detoured to an island lovers’ lane. That’s when Ted purposefully plunged the Olds into the water, and Powers worked his diabolical magic to cover up the crime, the investigator told The ENQUIRER.

Although the local district attorney petitioned to have Mary Jo’s body exhumed, her parents and Ted — shown here at her funeral — opposed this measure. Ted had already paid them $90,000 and an insurance company kicked in $50,000 more. But her anguished parents came to regret the decision.

The ENQUIRER can now reveal the
guilt-ridden pol visited Mary Jo’s parents after having hinted he was going to reveal all. “Ted led us to believe he was going to explain what really happened," said Mary Jo’s mother,
Gwen (center). "But when the time came, after plenty of small talk, he said he just couldn’t talk about it.”

“It was very puzzling. Twice he couldn’t talk about how our daughter died.” The mother said she hated how “nothing decent” was reported about Mary Jo after her death, and the other “Boiler Room” gals never explained how her daughter ended up in Ted’s car (recreated for the "Chappaquiddick" movie).

“I’m angry at every one of those girls,” she said. “Somebody is hiding something. All of them were shut up.
I think there was a big cover-up and that everybody was paid off. The hearing, the inquest — it was all a farce. The Kennedys had the upper hand, and it’s been that way ever since!”
