The blockbuster probe was triggered by Philadelphia godfather Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino, who is currently facing federal racketeering, conspiracy and medical fraud charges. In January, Merlino — who’s also charged with running a nationwide gambling ring — brashly predicted the outcome of his trial and the upcoming Super Bowl.

“Deadlock win, all the way,” he boasted about his case. “Oh, and bet the Eagles,” he slyly added, referring to the big game. Despite overwhelming odds that favored the Patriots by a 4.5-point spread, tipped-off local wise guys dumped buckets of cash on their hometown team, following Merlino’s brash endorsement.

“The mob wanted this win,” said a longtime gambler with direct links to the Philadelphia Cosa Nostra. “They knew how much money could be made on having their underdogs win — but also the money they could make on knockoff merchandise in the city that they control!"

Savvy sources pointed out how easy it can be to change the course of a game, citing missed kicks, dropped passes and questionable coaching decisions, like players (the Pats' Malcolm Butler, for instance) being benched out of the blue, all of which occurred during the shocking Super Bowl upset on Feb. 4.

Brian Tuohy, who runs the website “The Fix Is In,” told The ENQUIRER he’s “100 percent certain” the Super Bowl could be and likely was manipulated. Organized crime chooses their targets carefully, looking for weaknesses, according to Brian.

There might be “a certain athlete on a certain team, who they can coerce or blackmail” or individuals who are simply driven by greed, he said. “The boys got their hooks into somebody,” our source snitched. “Too many things went wrong for it to be coincidence. “Joey knew what he was talking about.”
