Internet trolls better watch out — the royal family has declared war! Duchesses Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have been victims of social media haters in recent months, and Buckingham Palace has had enough!
Officials from the palace have resorted to posting rules for any user commenting or posting on Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, or Clarence House social media channels — and have even threatened legal action to those who don’t abide!
“We ask that anyone engaging with our social media channels shows courtesy, kindness and respect for all other members of our social media communities,” the Royal Family website read.

According to the announcement, comments “must not contain spam, be defamatory of any person, deceive others, be obscene, offensive, threatening, abusive, hateful, inflammatory or promote sexually explicit material or violence.”

Both Kate and Meghan, specifically, have been victims of sexist comments recently, while Prince Harry’s wife has also received racial backlash.
That said, comments must also not “promote discrimination based on race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age,” according to the royal family.

According to The Sun, palace officials spend hours per day weeding through the horrific comments.
“It was pretty vile for a while. There are automated tools which help to police the very inappropriate comments getting through and also manual moderation — but there are often thousands of comments,” a source revealed.

“It only takes a couple of people to stir up a really nasty conversation with people being very aggressive. The issue of concern is about how people are treating each other.”

Because of this, the royal family wasn’t afraid to scare away trolls with legal action. “We reserve the right to determine, at our discretion, whether contributions to our social media channels breach our guidelines. We reserve the right to hide or delete comments made on our channels, as well as block users who do not follow these guidelines,” the statement read.

“We also reserve the right to send any comments we deem appropriate to law enforcement authorities for investigation as we feel necessary or is required by law.” Yikes!
