It has been 34 years since 22-year-old Sid Wells was shot execution-style in his home in Boulder, Colo., devastating Robert’s daughter Shauna, now 56. She had dated the fellow student for three years and the monstrous crime brought decades of sorrow to the Hollywood legend. “Robert feels he doesn’t have much time left, so he’s getting his affairs in order,” said a confidant, who adds that includes finding whoever is responsible for Sid’s senseless slaughter!

“Robert’s always said he will figure it out if it’s the last thing he does, and he won’t rest until whoever murdered Sid has been caught. “He loved that guy like a son.” Sid’s roommate, Thayne Smika, was initially arrested for the crime, but was never charged due to lack of evidence and is believed to be living under an alias in Mexico or California. Robert has said of Wells’ murder, “It’s like a partially opened door with a very dark room behind it.”

Photos taken at the recent Venice Film Festival show the strain years of sorrow have had on the 81-year-old “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” star, who appeared scrawny and frail. Just four years ago, illness forced Robert to slow his schedule, but he managed to soldier on. He is poised to complete what will be his last two screen appearances: “Our Souls at Night,” which co-stars his “Electric Horseman” love interest Jane Fonda, and “Old Man and the Gun,” with Sissy Spacek.
