The 42-year-old super-model magnet was spied wearing the wireless device — believed to be a heartbeat-monitoring 'Zio' patch — while walking in NYC’s East Village. Medical columnist and radio host Dr. Gabe Mirkin says the gadget is used to detect a sometimes fatal condition — an irregular heartbeat.

“The three-inch patch can be worn continuously on the chest to record every heartbeat and will catch an irregular heartbeat that occurs sporadically,” explained the doc, who has not treated "The Revenant" stud. “An irregular heartbeat such as atrial fibrillation can cause clots that, in turn, cause sudden strokes and heart attacks that can kill a person.” Mirkin adds the device is usually worn for “a couple of weeks.”

A source close to Leo downplayed the device, saying the monitor is part of a routine checkup — but a Leo spy says the hard-partying womanizer is worried about his health. “Leo’s not getting any younger and he thought it was time to get checked out,” said the insider. "He’s afraid too many late nights, too much booze and food are a death sentence," the insider says.

As The National ENQUIRER recently reported, Leo has also been stressed by his link to an international money-laundering scheme involving the producers of his 2013 film, "The Wolf of Wall Street" — and was forced to hand over more than $3.2 million in artwork to U.S. authorities including a Picasso painting and one of Marlon Brando’s Oscars. “That unpleasant experience probably got his heart jumping,” noted the insider.
