This is the scene from "Under The Gun" that has Katie — along with director Stephanie Soechtig — being sued for defamation by a gun rights group in Virginia. As seen here, Katie asks the gun owners a question about preventing felons from owning guns — and the faked footage shows the Virginians seemingly shamed into silence. But the footage turned out to be a lie!
One member of the Virginia Citizens Defense League wisely recorded the entire interview that was shot on film — and, as heard here, the group immediately answered Katie's question with detailed responses. The footage used by the documentary to embarrass the gun owners was actually filmed when they were asked to sit in silence while the filmmakers shot footage for technical reasons.
The New York Premiere Of EPIX’s “Under the Gun” – Reception
"Under The Gun" was quickly yanked from the schedule by the Epix cable network — and Katie (seen here with the director) claimed to have actually complained about the planned deception, stating on the film's website: "VCDL members have a right for their answers to be shared, and so we have posted a transcript of their responses here. I regret that those eight seconds were misleading, and that I did not raise my initial concerns more vigorously."
